Mentorship guided SSP’s top IEB Scholar for 2018, SSP Alum Katlego Mahlo (St Mary’s School Waverley) who achieved eight distinctions. She and her Mentor, Chancellor of Wits University, Dr Judy Dlamini share a bond that will last forever.
Not only was Dr Dlamini Katlego’s Mentor but she also sponsored Katlego’s scholarship at SSP’s Partner School, St Mary’s Waverly. Asked what this mentorship has meant to Katlego, she replies, “We have a very close relationship, she is like a mother to me. Dr Dlamini also helped assist me with getting a scholarship for tertiary, and I will cherish our relationship forever”.
Katlego believes that Dr Dlamini benefited from the Mentor relationship “by seeing a young girl grow and defy the odds. This meant a lot to her as she was part of this inspirational story”.
Since completing her schooling, the Mentor-Mentee duo are still in contact, but can’t meet as before because Katlego is studying actuarial science at the University of Cape Town.
Why should professionals consider becoming a SSP Mentor? “They should sign up because they will get a chance to direct or guide someone else’s path – and be part of a greater process of building a young person”. These professionals should “relate to the young people and understand where they come from and their background,” Katlego concludes.
