Q: Do I have to be a sixth grade student?

A: Yes! Whether you are applying from Gauteng or the Eastern Cape, all applicants have to be in grade 6 at the time of application.

Q: Do I have to be a South African citizen?

A: You must be a South African citizen or have legal refugee status in the Republic of South Africa. Permanent residents are not eligible for the SSP scholarship.

Q: What school will I attend if selected as an SSP Scholar?

A: SSP scholarship recipients attend one of our SSP partner school. Student placement is a collaborative effort between SSP and the partner schools.

Q: Can I fax or email the application or its components to the Student Sponsorship Programme?

A: No. Faxed or emailed application forms or components will not be accepted. Completed application forms are to be hand delivered to our offices or designated library collection points. Eastern Cape applications to be notified on where to drop off application forms. Q: What represents a complete application?

A: You have completed the preliminary application process when you have delivered the application form, complete with your personal information, school report, birth certificate copy, parents/guardian ID copies and parent/guardian financial information (payslips or affidavits) to us.

Q: What are the requirements to apply to SSP?

A: You must be/have:

  • In Grade 6
  • Not older than 12 years of age at the time of application
  • Achieving an overall average of 70% or more in Grade 5
  • 70% minimum grade for mathematics, English and science
  • Financial need – less that R 200,000.00 combined annual family income
  • Leadership potential
  • Community Service orientated

Q: Who selects the Scholars?

A: Final selection is made by the Student Scholarship Programme Selection Committee which consists of SSP staff, alumni, mentors and parents, as well as corporate, educational and community leaders nationally. The committee reviews the applications and interviews the finalists.

Q: When do I find out if I am a recipient of an SSP scholarship?

A: All applicants will receive notification by October of each year.
