About ssp
our mission
We believe in change
Since 2000, the Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP), a non-profit trust, has been empowering talented South African learners from low-income homes with access to quality education. We provide full, five-year high school scholarships to academically gifted students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, opening doors to the best secondary schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape.
Nearly all SSP Scholars graduate with multiple distinctions and continue their education at esteemed institutions in South Africa, the US, and the UK. Many go on to become influential professionals and leaders in their fields.
Opportunity
We believe every talented student deserves access to quality education, regardless of their background.
Community
Through mentorship and alumni support, we foster a strong, lifelong network of scholars and leaders.
Empowerment
We equip young minds with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape their futures.
Impact
Every scholarship, donation, and act of support creates lasting change for generations to come.
Through the generous contributions of donors in South Africa and the US, SSP has supported 1,500+ scholars to attend top schools.
Our recruitment process begins in Grade 6, where we carefully select students based on academic excellence, emotional intelligence, financial need, and leadership potential. Once selected, these students are placed in our Partner Schools starting in Grade 8.
SSP’s commitment to our Scholars goes beyond financial support. We provide a comprehensive suite of services, including psycho-social support and personal development programs.
Our Scholar Programme Officers (SPOs) monitor both academic progress and well-being, ensuring every scholar receives the care and guidance they need to succeed.

Mentorship & Leadership Development
Each scholar is paired with a mentor—a successful professional who offers guidance throughout their high school career. These mentor-mentee relationships often evolve into lasting friendships that continue well after graduation.
A key component of our model is leadership development. SSP strives to cultivate “Leaders for South Africa,” committed to building a non-racist, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous nation. We aim for our alumni to remain dedicated to public service and become influential leaders in their chosen fields.
